THE BALLAD OF RUSTY AND ROY was inspired by Dusty Brown’s music. The play is about two half-brothers, both singer/songwriters in their own right, who reconnect after years of a strained relationship. The play creates an environment where the storytelling and songs of these characters combine and creates a unique and moving experience between performer and audience.

Half-brothers Rusty and Roy come from the same Texas trailer park but have little in common besides their guitars and step-dads. Impending fatherhood brings them together again in this screwed-up-family singalong for adult children of alcoholics written by Jonny and Troy Schremmer with music by Dusty Brown, starring Dusty Brown and Troy Schremmer, directed by Shana Gold and premiering this month at the New York International Fringe Festival!

Dusty Brown (Rusty Wood) was most recently in Neil Labute’s Reasons to be Pretty at TheatreSquared in Fayetteville, AR and in Scott Organ’s play Point Last Seen at The Atlantic Theater Company’s Stage 2. Earlier this year he starred in Phoenix, also by Scott Organ, at the Barrow Group. He is also part of the comedic trio The Barrel Brothers (with Tony Hale and Greg Bratman) which performs regularly at Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre and other venues around the country. Their series of short films have garnered attention from National Lampoon, Comedy Central, and MTV. Dusty studied acting at The Carnegie Mellon School of Drama.

Troy Schremmer (Roy Schultz/Playwright) has worked in New York as an actor with HB Playwrights Foundation, Midtown International Theatre Festival, Native Aliens, Theatre for a New Audience and Ensemble Studio Theatre. He also played Mr. Lowrey in Mike Akel’s Spirit Award nominated film Chalk and received the Stargazer Award, which honors breakout talent for excellence in acting at the Gen Art Film Festival in New York. His independent feature An Ordinary Family will premier at the Los Angeles Film Festival in June. Troy studied acting with Uta Hagen at HB Studios and is currently the Director of Education at Fort Washington Collegiate Church in northern Manhattan.

Jonny Schremmer (Playwright) received her MFA in Acting from the University of Texas at Austin, and here in New York she’s acted with HB Playwrights Foundation, Mabou Mines, Theatre for a New Audience, Columbia University, Ensemble Studio Theatre Octoberfest, New Georges, Six Figures, American Living Room Festival at HERE and Dodger Theatricals. She studied acting with Uta Hagen at HB Studio and plays Coach Webb in Mike Akel’s award winning independent feature Chalk. Next up is Akel’s An Ordinary Family premiering at the Los Angeles Film Festival in June. Her one-act play Uncle, also written with husband Troy, was produced as part of The Mercy Plays at CenterStage in New York.

Shana Gold (Director) New play development has been seen at: Soho Rep, Woolly Mammoth, New York Stage and Film, Ensemble Studio Theatre, Clubbed Thumb, Epic Theatre’s Sunshine Series, New Dramatists’ PLAYTIME, Silk Road Theatre Project, and Manhattan Theatre Club’s Sloane Series. Directing credits include: UNDERNEATH THE LINTEL by Glen Berger and Labute’s REASONS TO BE PRETTY (Theatre Squared), HAKAWATIYEH/THE STORYTELLER by Nathalie Handal (The Kennedy Center), Stanton Wood’s AT THE POLE (Urban Stages), and IN THE CROSSING by Leila Buck (The Public Theatre/The Culture Project). Her production of John Walch’s play CIRCUMFERENCE OF A SQUIRREL (Austin Theatre Center) received the Austin Critics Table Awards for Best Production of a Comedy and Best Director. Shana received her MFA in Directing from Brooklyn College, has taught at NYU/PHTS and currently teaches theatre residencies in the New York City public schools for The Lincoln Center Theatre. She is a member of the Lincoln Center Directors Lab, Soho Rep’s Writer/Director Lab, and a New Georges Affiliated Artist. Upcoming: THE BALLAD OF RUSTY AND ROY (NYC Int’l Fringe Festival) and Lameeece Issaq’s FOOD AND FADWA (New York Theatre Workshop).

Veronica Graveline (Stage Manager) Recent credits include: H4 with Resonance Ensemble, The Spring Fling at IRT, Renovations at White Plains PAC, Carnival Round the Central Figure at IRT, Murder in the Cathedral with Brooklyn Arts HQ, Spring Awakening and Game Over with Red Stage Theatre, Works-A-Foot at Montclair State University. Upcoming: Crystal Skillman’s Action Philosophers at The Brick’s Comic Book Theater Festival.
